In her speech Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary uses the term ‘Paki-Bashing’, which my woke colleagues tell me is a racist expression and English people shouldn’t use it. This is after saying that the children of Pakistani citizens can be “English”, and that anyone with an opposing view is an ethnonationalist. She said that patriotism was a force for good, but that ethno-nationalism “struggles to accept that someone who looks like me and has a faith like mine can truly be English”

Office for National Statistics says she’s wrong on Ethnicity

The English are an ethnic group, as are Pakistanis. The Office for National Statistics classifies the English as having white ethnicity and lists the various ways in which a person may choose to define their ethnic group. It says that “This may include common ancestry, elements of culture, identity, religion, language and physical appearance. It is generally accepted that ethnic group does include all these aspects, and others, in combination.”

Ethnicity is therefore not acquired by post code. No-one says that Bonnie Prince Charlie was Italian (born and raised in Rome), or that Rishi Sunak’s parents were anything other than India (both born and raised in Africa).

Her Real Ethnicity

Like other politicians, she has only recently become English. In a 2011 interview she was quite clear that she was Asian and a Kashmiri

She made a similar claim to be English on the 15th of September and may have spent the entire month in her trans-English identity’

Little Englanders

The term “Little Englander” was first recorded in 1833, and was usually derogatory. Since the 2010s, especially after the 2016 Brexit referendum, the term has become a popular derogatory epithet for English nationalists who mistrust  the European Union and globalism. There are no equivalent terms for Scottish, Welsh, or Irish nationalists. The Home Secretary made a pun of this racialised slur in her speech, and said she didn’t want a “Littler England”, but her meaning was clear.

This is an act of ethnic identity displacement. Any form of Englishness which doesn’t include Pakistanis is in her view, wrong.
