DEFENDER OF THE FAITH
Since Henry the Eighth over 500 years ago every English king and queen has inherited the title “Defender of the Faith,” meaning defender of Christianity, since it was the Pope who gave Henry the title. In 1994, however, Charles stated that he wanted to be called “Defender of Faith” meaning both defender of all religions and a defender of none.
In 2014, the author, Martin Amis, was interviewed by the Vanity Fair magazine. He said that he quarrelled with Charles for refusing to offer support to Salman Rushdie after the Iranians issued fatwa was issued against him. Charles refused to offer support “if someone insults someone else’s deepest convictions”. After the book was published, Rushdie’s publisher was shot, the Italian translator stabbed and the Japanese editor was killed.
In 1993 as patron of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, he said “Islam can teach us a way of understanding and living in the world which Christianity itself is poorer for having lost.”
On Women’s rights he also said: “Islamic countries like Turkey, Egypt and Syria gave women the vote as early as Europe did its women and much earlier than in Switzerland! In those countries women have long enjoyed equal pay, and the opportunity to play a full working role in their societies.”
(Fact Check: A 2013 UN study found 99% of Egyptian women have experienced sexual harassment or violence.)
In 1996, Nazim Al-Haqqani, the grand mufti of Cyprus, announced that Charlie had converted to Islam. It doesn’t take much, no ceremony and no study needed, just a simple declaration. To become a Muslim, you must sincerely declare the Shahada, the Testimony of Faith: “I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Messenger”
Indeed he had studied Arabic so that he could read the Koran in the original text. He even built a ‘carpet garden at Highgrove: “I planted fig, pomegranate, and olive trees in the garden,” he said, “because of their mention in the Koran.”
2004 He said a strange thing: “I see Muslim religious education as a key factor in helping Muslims integrate into British and western society without losing their identity “. It is strange, because he seems to say that he doesn’t see their identity as British. You wouldn’t say that about a religiously observant Pole or Romanian. Surely the purpose of emigrating to the UK is to become British?
After the London tube and bus bombings in July 2025 (52 dead) he was keen to defend the religion: “Islam preaches humanity, tolerance and a sense of community.” He said in response: “These acts have nothing to do with any true faith.” Muslims have said the same about the Muslim prison population of England and Wales. “They’re not Muslims any more” I was told when I pointed out that 17% of prisoners were Muslim. “No Muslim would break the law”
There was indeed a religious motivation for these London bombings, but Charles would not admit to it. He was defending faith.
In a 2006 speech at Al Azhar University in Egypt he condemned the publication of cartoons depicting Mohammed in a Danish newspaper, as an “assault on minorities in Europe.” “The recent ghastly strife and anger over the Danish cartoons shows the danger that comes of our failure to listen and to respect what is precious and sacred to others.” He said, forgetting that the Danes might hold free speech to be precious and that people should respect that.
In 2025 King Charles issued a personal Easter message (Not a Buckingham Palace press release) ““The love He showed when He walked the Earth reflected the Jewish ethic of caring for the stranger and those in need, a deep human instinct echoed in Islam and other religious traditions, and in the hearts of all who seek the good of others.” Just a few days before: “#EidMubarak to Muslims celebrating in the UK and around the world,” – No praise for Christianity in that speech.
COUSIN MARRIAGE
So much for the serious stuff. Muslims from the Indian sub-continent living in the UK are criticised for their inclination towards cousin marriages. It isn’t something King Charles is going to fuss over. Here’s a detailed list of British monarchs who married their cousins since William III and Mary II, who themselves were first cousins (both grandchildren of Charles I and Henrietta Maria):
👑 Cousin Marriages by British Monarchs (Post-1689)
Monarch | Spouse | Degree of Cousinship | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
William III (r. 1689–1702) | Mary II | First cousins | Both grandchildren of Charles I. Their marriage was politically strategic and led to the Glorious Revolution. |
George I (r. 1714–1727) | Sophia Dorothea of Celle | Second cousins | Both descended from the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg. Their marriage was notoriously unhappy. |
George II (r. 1727–1760) | Caroline of Ansbach | Third cousins | Shared descent from John George I of Saxony. |
George III (r. 1760–1820) | Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz | Third cousins | Both descended from Duke Johann of Mecklenburg. |
Queen Victoria (r. 1837–1901) | Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha | First cousins | Shared grandfather: Duke Francis of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Their marriage had profound dynastic and genetic consequences. |
George V (r. 1910–1936) | Mary of Teck | Second cousins once removed | Both descended from George III. Their union reinforced ties within the royal family. |
Elizabeth II (r. 1952–2022) | Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh | Third cousins through Queen Victoria; also second cousins once removed through Christian IX of Denmark | Their shared ancestry linked them to multiple European royal houses. |
Genetic risks: The most famous example is Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, whose inbred descendants spread haemophilia across several royal families.
CIRCUMCISION
Muslims are of course circumcised. It has been said that male members of the Royal Family were circumcised, and that Jewish mohels (circumcisers) did it. Queen Victoria is often cited as the originator of the practice. Some accounts claim she believed she was descended from King David, which may have influenced her interest in Jewish customs. However, this claim is largely speculative and tied to British Israelism, a fringe belief system that sought to link British royalty to biblical lineage. The most well-documented case is King Charles, who was reportedly circumcised in 1948 by Dr. Jacob Snowman, a respected Jewish mohel and physician. Princes Andrew and Edward were also reportedly circumcised. Prince Harry confirmed in his memoir Spare that he was circumcised, despite rumours that Princess Diana had opposed it.
SUMMARY
There we have it; playing down Islamist terrorism in London, praising Islam in his Easter message, also saying Islam was in one respect at least, superior to Christianity, circumcised, cousin marriages, and a marked lack of sympathy for those punished for criticising Islam. That’s not so far removed from the Church of England position either.
Except for one thing. The C of E is increasingly drifting towards LGBTQ rights in a way that King Charles has never done. Neither has Islam.
